Seems like street photography is gaining popularity here in Singapore. I see many people hanging their DSLRs and Micro 4/3 cameras on their necks out in the streets and just bursting away. I've long grown out from the bursting mode and brought myself back a step to enjoy photography. I may not be shooting and posting more often, but I am generally more satisfied with the process of bringing up the viewfinder to my eye, tuning the shutter speed and adjusting the aperture. This process makes me complete. It's like enjoying the journey rather than telling people you've been to this and that country. Who cares if you've been to Paris but didn't enjoy the trip? Who cares if you're here in Singapore but went to the flyer, infinity pool at MBS and had a good time? The process of enjoying taking photos has taught me to be patient with my photography skills and take, not for the sake of taking, but for the sake of enjoying photography, be it analogue or digital.

Coffee and people watching

I love having a cup of coffee and watching people walk past. It's like I'm in a different dimension, stationery and weightless. The people walking past are oblivious to my presence, engaging in their private conversations, thoughts, actions and space. The feeling I get is soothing and yet detached at the same time. Isn't life all about balance? Lift and darkness. Yin and yang. Man and woman.

Ok, I know it's always been the same starting line how I have not been posting for some time. But today is a special day. Toda yis the day I turn 30 years old!!! A lot had happened during the last decade (damn, I sound super old to be using 'decade'!), some bad, some good. But I am glad I'm still here still being able to write a post and celebrating this special day of mine. The past decade has brought many changes to my life. Not only had it matured me, it had also created many doors of opportunities and surprises. I guess this is life. Like what my Melbourne friends would always ask me,"What's up with life?". So here, I will recap the many 'ups' of my life in the last decade.1. Gaining back freedomYes, 21 years of age, I gained back my freedom from National Service. Not only that, I also gained some freedom as a celebrated adult where my parents gave me the liberty to decide on my life. I guess that's a turning point in my life as well because after 2.5 years of pondering what I want for my future, I decided to go back to polytechnic to pursue a diploma in biotechnology, effectively pinning the science field on myself. 2. Start of the rat raceAt 24, I graduated with a diploma in biotechnology with flying colors. Not exactly the top 5%, but I reckon it could be the top 10% (I may be bragging but it could be true!). Went to a few nerve-wrecking interviews and fortunately, I got into DSO National Laboratories. It was the start of my rat race and a career and I never looked back since. My first salary, my first official job. It was satisfying!3. Dream TripI finally brought my mum to Hokkaido in 2009! It's been my dream to visit Hokkaido and the trip sure did not disappoint! I will be back for more!

4. The door of opportunityAfter 2 years in DSO, I finally got myself a undergraduate scholarship from the company to pursue my degree. I decided that a diploma is not going to last long in Singapore in the future, so I made the decision to further my studies in Melbourne. It was the start of a love-hate experience in Melbourne. I made some great friends in Melbourne whom I will always remember for the rest of my life. They are the people who keep me sane during those crazy exam periods (freezing fingers in the winter and searing heat in the summer at the Royal Exhibition Building) and insane during those parties and trips! ZQ (the alcoholic), Yiu Yiu (the sleepy one), Jing Kai (another alcoholic), Pream (the only Singapore Indian), Leonard (the buffalo), Wei Loon (the never-pick-up-the-phone guy), Nicholas (broken wrist), Amanda (SBGJ), Alexis (Miss Smoke and Drink), Percival (Mr Gig), Lisa (Snowy), Melissa (Porky), Dos (the racer), Arfann (the IKEA man), Alex (Mr Quiet Guy), Bowon (the North Korean spy), Ben (Mr Party), Mei Qi (the crazy scientist), Debra (Miss Blur). Have to thank them for the understanding and patience with me as I juggle between school and a long distance relation. More on this in the next point. Without these crazy people, I wouldn't have tide through my Honours year. Yes, I managed to secure a H1 (First Class Honours equivalent) for my Honours! Also got awarded the best poster presentation during the Melbourne Protein Group Symposium which made my supervisor, Dr Danny Hatters, proud!

5. The love that changed my lifeThanks to Melissa, I got to know my then-girlfriend (now fiancée!) a few months before I went to Melbourne. I knew her back in 2004, but it wasn't until 2008 that I have a chance to know her better. So, we got together about 2 months before I left for Melbourne and we maintained a long distance relationship for 2 years. Thanks for her understanding and also that of my Melbourne and Singapore friends that we managed to make it through till now. I have to constantly miss gatherings and parties in Melbourne just to Skype with my darling, so I'm glad my friends can understand my situation. Not only that, I have to thank Melissa and Baoling for keeping my darling accompanied during the 2 lonely years. Thanks buddies!

6. A new chapter in life.On 1 Jan 2012, I decided to start a new chapter in our lives. I proposed on that day to mark a new beginning in our lives. No longer will I make her wait for me again. I have kept her waiting for a long time, so it is time I contribute back to her. Now is the daunting period to start hotel hunting for banquet, start looking for gown and photography studios, compile the guest line and many more! I hope everything can go well and avoid any unhappiness! I'm just praying hard!

Sorry, it's been a long time since I last updated this blog. I really should do a more regular update. I've been neglecting my DSLR and playing more with my rangefinder and film cameras. Think the only digital camera that I'm using most frequently is my iPhone. Instagram is the app that really got me going. Adding friends and viewing pictures from all over the world. Widen my knowledge of this beautiful world! Here are some pictures that I really like from my own album.

New Resolution

Gone is 2010! One of my most miserable years of my life! Am I glad it is finally over! Welcome 2011~ Hope this year will be a good year for me.

New resolutions for the year:

1. Canon 550D (better "resolution" than my current 400D, hence the cheesy title!)
*Initially, I sort of already put aside the idea to upgrade. However, my niece is now interested in my 400D since she's just an amateur, I am considering selling her my 400D setup with battery grip and 17-85mm F4.0 USM IS to her. This way, I just need a little cash on my side to top up for a 550D! How cool is that!

2. More time to play with my other cameras. Since my workplace bans any photographic devices, including camera handphones (yes, you should be able to guess my line of work), so it is a little restrictive on trying to fulfill this one. But, I'll try my best!

3. Get FIT! My weight has gone up by a few kilos and I need to desperately shed those love handles so that I can fit back into my old jeans and trousers! And also to TRY to aim for Silver award in my IPPT!

4. SAVE UP! Not so much for cameras (although I do hope I can acquire a few more cameras I'm eyeing), but more so for my 老婆本。 People have been hurrying me to get married. I mean, I want to get married not because they're pressuring me. I seriously want to start a family and I've found the right girl. So the time has come. When? TOP SECRET... Shhhhhh.......

YES! Finally I'm home! Back in Singapore for good! Hopefully I can have more time for photography, not forgetting girlfriend and family.

Unfortunately, I did not win the photography contest. The winner was the HDR picture of the bicycle. Congrats to Isurusen for his win of the Canon SD4500. Hopefully I can have some decent results for the next contest I enter.

Here are some overdue shots from my Ricoh Autohalf. I suspect that my Ricoh Autohalf might have some problems with the winding. I can't seem to finish more than 30 exposures. This is supposed to take 72 shots with a 36-exposure film. Mine takes only about 30 shots... Will find time to ask Mijonju about it. Hopefully I don't have to send it back to Japan to Ryu-san for repair.

Fujifilm has just released a new camera known as the FinePix X100. It is a 12.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS camera with a 23mm fixed focal length with a FAST! prime F2 Fujinon aspherical lens! How cool is that?!!! But the coolest thing about this camera that got all the camera-loving people all excited is the high resolution optical viewfinder (OVF) that packs 1.4 megapixel into that small LCD window! Just imagine the 3" LCD screen on your digital camera averages only about 0.5 megapixel. How the hell did they do that?! Nonetheless, it is still one sexy camera in my own opinion.

Old Love

Why is it that people have a love for something old? Old, as in, retro, vintage, historical. There is just something about these old things that captivate us. Is it because of their historical values? Or is it just that we are looking for something that accompanied us through our childhood? And maybe, it is just a way of reminiscing the past. So does it mean that there is no future? I wouldn’t say that there is no future. But somehow, the past seems a more familiar and comforting period than the unknown “something” that is ahead of us.

For me, I realize that I am losing a lot of my memories of my childhood. My primary school friend tagged me a class photo during our Primary 3 days and I have totally no recollection of which class I was in. I tried hard to remember my primary school days, but my memory is failing me. I can only remember my Primary 1-2 and 5-6 days. Somehow, there seems to be an ‘empty void’ during that missing 2 years. I really wonder where that memory went… I really want to remember how I was when I was just a kid…

For a camera lover like me, I am beginning to love (or getting back the old feeling of loving) film photography and those small, compact cameras. I was a Konica and Pentax film camera fan before the invasion of the digital age. Just a few days ago, I woke up having this “impulsiveness” to sell my DSLR because I find that I enjoy film more than digital. Yes, digital is free and you can shoot all you want. But shooting more doesn’t mean that you are becoming better. The phrase “practise makes perfect” doesn’t seem to apply here, at least for me… Randomly shooting a thousand photos and only selecting a few isn’t going to make me a better photographer. With film, you treasure every shot and you want to make the best out of every shot. No shot is taken to be deleted.

With film, that “nostalgia” feeling of the “unknown” just gets to me. You won’t know what you’re going to get until you develop your films. I like the feeling of buying a CD and anticipating how the CD art will look the moment I opened the casing. It just never fails to give me the excitement. So I guess it is the same for film photography. I won’t know how my shots will turn out until they are developed. So the good old feeling of shooting film still gets to me nowadays.

I just wish I had more time to go out shooting more films. But I am tied down with my Honours project at the moment, so hopefully before I return home for good in December, I can have the time to shoot more Australia since I don’t know when I will be back again. I want to preserve my memories of my time here before 20 years down memory lane, I again have no recollection of this 2 difficult years of my life. So I will leave you to think about your own “old, retro, vintage” times while I head back to the lab to do some work.

Oh yes, about my DSLR… I decided not to sell it. Will keep it for “memory sake” since this is my first DSLR. =)

Lego + Camera = ???

Remember those days when you have tons of Lego blocks and you made whatever things that come to your mind. Guns, animals, buildings... You know what you did with your Lego blocks. Decades down memory lane, you start to go into gadgets like cameras, phones, music players, games etc... What if someone/some companies decide to make a gadget out of toys?

Welcome Pentax Optio NB1000. Pentax decided to merge Lego with their Optio series of cameras, bringing a new meaning to the word "toy camera". I would say this is a pretty cool idea, but definitely not the first, since ndroo decorated one Holga with Lego blocks back in 2008. But nonetheless, I still love the Optio NB1000. Seems like it's going to be one hell-of-a-fun camera! I never had the luxury to play with Lego when I was young (I'm actually getting old now considering how often my muscles ache). So I'd definitely welcome this new "toy" into my "family". But subjected to my girlfriend's and mum's approval. I've been acquiring too many cameras nowadays... Need to have the "toy"'s passport stamped by these two authorities before they can be added to my (small) collection. But I wouldn't mind it as a birthday gift... *evil laughter* This way, I don't have to get the "passport" stamped...

WOOHOO~~~ Received a missed mail note in my mailbox few days ago. Finally got time to go to the post office to pick the item up. When I saw the size of the parcel, I knew what I was expecting... Seeing the attached mailing receipt on the parcel further confirms what is inside. From mijonju, Tokyo.

Eager to unwrap this parcel. It is always an exciting affair to unwrap a gift/parcel, even though you already knew what the content is. The excitement never fails to get to me!

Can't seem to get the Fujifilm Natura ISO 1600 films here in Melbourne. Had to make do with a ISO 800. Will bring this little pet to the Manifest this weekend to test it out! Keep watching this space for more pictures to come! I apologize for the delay in uploading pictures. I tend to collect a few rolls of films before I send them for developing. So bear with me until I get back to Singapore!

1st Batch of R4M shots

Finally sent my films from R4M and Spinner 360 to the photo lab. Vanbar Imaging at Carlton. Not too impressed with their service. Or rather, I was unhappy with their service. Sent in a roll of slide and a roll of negatives from R4M and 2 rolls from Spinner 360.

Was told that scanning of slide into digital format will cost about $50. So I just developed the slide. Told them about the films from Spinner 360 and asked if they could put it into digital format. Again, they can't do it. So I told them not to cut my films so that they do not end up cutting my films into random pieces. So again, told Vanbar to develop these 360 films. As for the negatives, I said I wanted a medium resolution pictures which is about 1-2 MB. The guy told me high resolution will be about 6 MB per picture. I told him that a medium resolution will do. Summary, I can only get a digital format of only one negative while the rest were only developed.

Development went OK, but the digital format pictures came out only 600 kB each! To me, this is a low resolution picture! ROARS! Fed up with Vanbar! Not going to go back there anymore! Guess I will bring all my films back to TripleD for development and digitalization.

The Impossible Camera

The folks from The Impossible Project is asking for ideas about making their new Impossible Camera. After working on an idea for a night, I found myself working on Illustrator to come up with this idea.

My concept is a camera that is able to do a tilt-shift mechanism to bring about the signature effect, such as this:

By pushing and pulling the 4 screws at each corner, you can achieve such an effect. The camera is to be compatible with The Impossible Project's PX100 instant film. Lens would be a 50mm F8 with variable shutter setting, including bulb mode for low light photography.

Maybe I'm too stressed out by school work that I am taking the day off to slack and daydream. Been such a crazy and tedious time for me at the moment, juggling project, rushing report, preparing for symposiums and conferences and managing house chores... Not the easiest of life, but I do hope to get it over and done with soon so that I can head back home for good...

Spin! Spin! Spin!

Finally got my hands on the Spinner 360 after a mixed-up by DHL. I've indicated to DHL that I wanted a re-delivery after they came to deliver it on Tuesday. I've specially indicated that the re-delivery be made to Bio21 where I am doing my Honours year and give me a call when they reached the reception so that I can collect it personally. I waited until the end of Wednesday, but didn't receive a call from DHL. I went to the reception to ask if they had signed on my behalf. The reception said they don't receive any parcels or deliveries and asked that I checked the mail room and store office. Nothing in the mail room and I can't check with the store office as they have all knocked off. So I tracked my parcel online and found that someone by the name of Peter signed for my item! ROARS!

So the next day, I went to check the store office and mail room again. No sign of my parcel. I am now panicking where my parcel went. In desperation, I went to the general store where all the chemicals and general items were. And there it was, my parcel with DHL's delivery note and my name! Alas! Finally found my item, but I am definitely not impressed by DHL service. Imagine anyone can sign on your behalf despite me indicating that I want to collect it personally and also to call me when the delivery is made. DHL is condemned!

Ok, back to the item. Spinner 360 which can take a single picture 360 degrees. With a pull of the chord, the camera spins 360 degrees and takes a single picture. Such a fun toy! Spinner 360 uses 35mm films and can take up to 8 pictures per 36 exposure films.

Lomography films. Not sure what's the difference, but since it's not too expensive (compared to Melbourne), might as well give it a try.

I know the top one is the extra rubber ring. But I have no idea what the lens cap is for as it doesn't fit the camera with the hood on. Not sure if I can remove the hood.

The top view. The left dolphin is a bubble level and the right is the rewind crank. The hotshoe can be used to mount your bike flashlight as a flash because the hotshoe does not have any contact points. So normal flash will not work. Be creative!

Got a parcel from Tokyo and like a boy who's received his birthday present, I am very thrilled and delighted by the looks of it! I love unwrapping gifts! The anticipation and element of surprise never fail to get to me. Although I know what is in there, I still get all excited about it! Will post some pictures taken once I have a few rolls to send in for developing. Maybe I should start to learn developing my own films to cut costs? Hmmm...

Check out this uber cool camera, the ALPA 12 TC, made by Swiss studio, Estragon, for ALPA of Switzerland. This monster is a 60 MP camera! It is also a film camera! It is a hybrid, depends on what body you fix your lens to. It takes 6x9 roll-film. This baby is customisable, meaning that you can change the handle and add on accessories like spirit level, flashlight, exposure meter and others. This is just one of the camera bodies available. There are others like the ALPA SWA, ALPA WA and ALPA METRIC. Check out ALPA's website for more!

DC Comics - Super Hero World Record Attempt

I was up and early at Federation Square, Melbourne to witness the DC Comics - Super Hero World Record Attempt. Saw lots of Super Men, Super Women, Batmen, The Incredibles and Spidermen. The weather wasn't the best in the morning, but that didn't deter these super heroes from braving the cold and going into the record.

Watch your back, Olympus PEN and Lumix GF! Sony is releasing its digital rangefinder, NEX-3, soon! A review has been done and from the looks of it, this is going to give a run for Olympus and Panasonic. I really like the slim physique of the body, but not too sure of the lens though. Another attractive thing about the NEX-3 is the tilting LCD screen. The flash is equally appealing as well! Apparently, it handles ISO really well, even usable up to 12,800!

Looks like Sony is gearing up for real war in the digital rangefinder realm. We shall wait and watch...

Camera? Or Radio? Or Telephone?

OMG! Look at these! What the hell are they? Camera? Telephone? Or radio? THEY ARE CAMERAS!!! This is freaking cool! All these are credits of Ryuitsuki, who handmade all these DIGITAL cameras! HANDMADE! BEAT THAT! I want any one of these! Even better, every single one! These are Ricoh Auto Half cameras, made between 1960s to 1980s. Ryuitsuki gave these cameras a new lease of life (but may left us camera addicts with holes in our wallets). I'm not saying they're expensive. They work out to be about S$300-$500. I have no idea the resolution for these cameras. The only thing I know is that they are damn retro and cool~ They should be up at Mijonju's online store pretty soon...

I'll just keep on admiring... You can start admiring too... Just watch your wallet. I'm keeping mine far far away from me while I'm admiring...

Thanks for dropping by! I have been wanting to set up a blog for all my photographic stuff, but only managed to do this up after being busy for a long time now. Hope to use this blog to review some cameras I have, as well as record some fun and lovely things in life.

So who am I? kaxdd, my nickname. What is "kaxdd"? This is a little secret of mine, so I will let this remain a secret. "How do you pronounce 'kaxdd'?" Pronounce it as "kax". Silent double D's. How old am I? Hmmm... I once told someone I am in my mid-twenties, and he used an explicit word on me. "SHIT! YOU DON'T LOOK LIKE YOU'RE IN YOUR MID-TWENTIES! You look like you're 21!" I told me new friends in university I'm 23, and they believed it. So I'm really confused about my age. Perhaps I should just stick to being 23 all the time. Hahaha~ What is my job? Ermmm... Student cum public sector worker. What are my hobbies? Traveling, enjoying a quiet cup of coffee, playing video games, watching soccer (and hopefully still can play), and of course, photography!

Basically, I am someone who loves lenses! Be it spectacle glasses or camera lenses, I'd love them! I've got 5 pairs of glasses and counting! I love cameras! Why do I love lenses and cameras? I have myopia, so I can't see clearly without my glasses. Therefore, lenses are the tools for me to this beautiful world. Time is one element you cannot control. Once it's passed, it's history. But cameras have this ability to capture a moment and freeze it in time and space. Perhaps I have had too many moments in the past which I long to preserve, but haven't had the chance to. So now, I am making up for lost memories. So I hope to use cameras as a tool to capture all the extraordinary moments in life in the future. Be it film or digital cameras, I'll gladly pick any one of them up and go clicking away!
